What is a Reefer Container? - Guide | SCF

What is a Reefer Container?

A reefer container is a specialised shipping container designed to keep goods at a controlled cool temperature. Using a combination of insulation and powered cooling, these containers function like large refrigerators, maintaining temperatures between -25°C and +30°C. Think of it like a huge chilly-bin.

They are essential for transporting temperature-sensitive products, from fresh produce and dairy to pharmaceutical supplies. Reefer containers also play a crucial role in disaster relief and remote storage solutions.

In this guide, we’ll cover how refrigerated containers work, what they can store, and the sizes available. Plus, we’ll break down the costs of reefer containers and what to consider when choosing one for your needs.

Where did the name 'Reefer' Shipping Container come from?

The term 'Reefer' is short for 'refrigerated shipping container'.
Early refrigerated transport came in the form of cooled holding bays within ships, and later rudimentary cooling systems housed on the front of the unit.

Modern reefer containers are much more flexible in terms of size, capabilities and ease of transport. While their power sources have evolved from propane to diesel and electric, their cooling motors remain positioned at one end, ensuring consistent internal temperatures for perishable cargo.

How do Reefer Shipping Containers work?

Reefer containers use an integrated cooling system to regulate internal temperatures. The cooling unit is located at one end of the container and circulates cold air throughout the insulated interior, maintaining a consistent temperature.

These containers can be powered by an external power source on land, a generator on ships, or even portable diesel-powered units.
Advanced technology allows precise temperature control, humidity regulation, and proper airflow, making reefers ideal for transporting sensitive cargo.

Proper ventilation is essential for maintaining a reefer’s temperature and keeping goods fresh. To allow for proper airflow, cargo should be packed in ventilated boxes, and there should be no large gaps between products and the reefer’s walls.

Along with the refrigeration unit, which sits at one end of the container, reefers are built with insulation between the internal and external walls. The quality and thickness of this insulation play a key role in cooling efficiency. High-performance insulation reduces the workload on the refrigeration unit, cutting down energy costs and improving long-term performance—especially in New Zealand’s variable climate, from hot summers to cooler winters.

How are Reefer Shipping Containers powered?

There are two variations of reefer motor - electric and diesel.

Electric Reefers and Cool Rooms

Electric reefer units are most commonly used for static storage at warehouses, events, or other sites with access to power. They are also used for transporting goods, but while in transit the cooling motor remains inactive.

During this time, the reefer relies on its insulation to maintain a stable internal temperature, ensuring products stay within their required range until they reach their next powered location.

Diesel Reefers and Cool Rooms

Diesel reefers are commonly used for transport, especially in New Zealand, where goods are moved long distances by truck, rail, and ferry. These containers are powered by a diesel generator set (genset), which supplies electricity to the refrigeration unit.

If delays occur, the genset can be easily refueled at transport depots, truck stops, or logistics hubs, ensuring the cargo remains at the correct temperature throughout its journey.

What can be stored in a Reefer or Cool Room?

Reefer containers are designed to store a wide range of temperature-sensitive products, making them essential for industries like food distribution, pharmaceuticals, and floriculture.

Types of Goods Stored in Reefers:
Reefer containers can hold anything typically found in a supermarket’s fresh produce, chilled, or frozen sections. This includes:

Fish, Meats and Poultry

Both fresh and frozen seafood, such as salmon, mussels, and crayfish, as well as beef, lamb, and poultry, are commonly transported in reefers to maintain food safety standards.
SCF Shipping Containers - Dairy

Dairy

Milk, cheese, yogurt, and butter must be stored at precise temperatures to prevent bacterial growth while maintaining texture and quality.
SCF Shipping Containers - Pharmaceuticals

Pharmaceuticals

Many vaccines, insulin, and specialty medicines require strict temperature control, making reefers essential for healthcare logistics.

Fresh from the farm to you! Items like apples, kiwifruit, avocados, and leafy greens require specific temperature and humidity levels to stay fresh. Reefers help extend their shelf life by preventing spoilage and dehydration.

Temperature fluctuations can quickly damage flowers like roses, lilies, and tulips. Reefers provide the right environment to keep them fresh for longer.

Storage & Loading Efficiency

To ensure efficient storage and transport, most reefer containers are designed to fit two pallets side by side, allowing for secure and organised loading.

For businesses needing higher storage capacity, some reefers come with Vertical Load Bars, allowing double stacking of pallets. This feature effectively doubles the internal storage space while maintaining airflow and preventing damage to goods.
